Colombia: A rich source of amazing students
The demand for language courses, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes has been booming in Colombia and the outlook for international student mobility remains strong for the years ahead. As one of the hottest markets for international student recruitment, Colombia deserves a key place in your marketing mix.
BMI has organised fairs in Colombia since 1996 and has also operated the annual EuroPosgrados Colombia on behalf of Campus France and DAAD since 2010. Our fairs are held here twice a year and the March 2019 fair edition will also feature a separate EuroPosgrados pavilion in all three Colombian cities (Cali, Medellín and Bogotá), making it the perfect platform for European institutions to recruit at the postgraduate level.
Peru on the rise
The Peruvian economy has experienced a boom in recent years and as a result, there has been increasing interest in Peru as a student recruitment market.
Education institutions have increased their engagement in Peru’s capital city Lima since the government launched the “Pronabec Becas de la República” programme – a government initiative to increase funding for postgraduate courses. The government in Peru has, over the last few years, made a whole range of scholarship programmes available, some of which have had a very positive effect on student mobility.

Panama packs a punch in the student recruitment industry
Despite its small geographic size, Panama punches above its weight when it comes to student recruitment.
The country has grown twice as fast as other countries in the region in the last 15 years, thanks to the famous canal, open fiscal policies and the use of the US Dollar as its main currency. Panama is home to a high concentration of wealthy families who are eager to provide a top quality education for their children outside of the small nation.
Moreover, the government agency IFARHU (Institute for Training and Use of Human Resources) provides scholarships and financial support for students to study abroad at all levels of education. IFARHU regularly attends BMI fairs and fully supports our mission to increase access to international education opportunities for students around the world.
Eager students await you in Ecuador
Ecuador has initiated a number of education reforms in the last decade, including more investment into its own education system and towards study abroad scholarships. Between 2007 and 2017, the government spent nearly US $14 billion on education, which accounts for 2% of the country’s GDP, and US $586 million was dedicated to scholarships, according to the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (SENESCYT).
Expo Estudiante is supported by SENESCYT and draws in bigger crowds each year. This steady increase in education abroad is also boosted by the nation’s economic health. Like Panama, Ecuador also benefits from the stability of the US Dollar, making its citizens immune to currency fluctuations and offering attractive propositions for foreign investment.
Recruiting students in Chile
Chile is the only South American OECD member and is recognised as the strongest performing economy in the region. The country has the highest human development index and GDP per capita in Latin America.
To fuel outbound student mobility and increase interest in postgraduate studies abroad, the Chilean government continues to fund their popular Becas Chile scholarship programme. Meanwhile, their “Penguins without Borders” programme funds the best high school students to study for six months in New Zealand or Canada at the secondary school level.
BMI attracts more than 6,500 visitors to their student recruitment fairs in Chile annually. As the international education market in Chile is maturing, Chilean students are looking for a range of opportunities overseas including language, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The ExpoEstudiante March fair will also feature a EuroPosgrados pavilion in both Santiago and Concepción.
